A testament to the rich silk-producing past of the Cévennes, the building transformed the cocoons raised in local silkworm farms into precious silk thread, thanks to the clear water of the nearby Vis river. Its functional architecture – thick walls, tall windows – has been carefully preserved during the renovation. For three centuries, the Cévennes were the cradle of French silk, a tradition still honoured today in local museums.
